Everything is connected.
Food, materials and energy depend on shared land, sea and biomass resources. TERRAMARE helps reveal how choices in one sector affect ecosystems, climate and communities across Europe.
ONE DECISION, MANY CONSEQUENCES
How do we make room for competing needs?
Land and sea provide food, materials, energy and vital habitats. Decisions about how to use them can bring benefits in one area while creating pressure in another. TERRAMARE brings research and stakeholder perspectives together to make these connections visible and support better informed choices.

How TERRAMARE works
01
Listen and define
Researchers and stakeholders identify the land and sea use questions that matter most, and define what meaningful answers should show.
02
Connect the evidence
The project brings together environmental and socioeconomic models to examine how choices about food, biomass, energy and ecosystems interact.
03
Explore the trade-offs
The LOTUS tool will help users compare possible pathways, understand their consequences and discuss choices with clearer evidence.

SHARED LANDSCAPES
One landscape. Many demands.
Forests, farmland and energy infrastructure share space across Europe. Meeting the demand for food, materials and energy also shapes habitats and climate outcomes. TERRAMARE examines these connections so that different priorities can be considered together.
THE TOOL IN DEVELOPMENT
Explore the consequences of connected choices
ERRAMARE is developing LOTUS — Land and Ocean Trade-offs in resource Use and Sustainability. It will bring together scientific models to help people compare possible pathways for land, sea and biomass use and examine their environmental and socioeconomic consequences.
LOTUS is under development. Its interface and results will be shared as the project progresses.

Better questions begin with different perspectives.
PLACES & PARTICIPATION
Designed with stakeholders. Tested across contexts.
Authorities, researchers, practitioners and civil society will help shape the questions TERRAMARE examines. The project plans an EU-wide application, regional case studies across Europe and an application in Brazil. Locations and opportunities to take part will be added as they are confirmed.
